Nitrile vs. Latex vs. Vinyl Exam Gloves: Which to Buy

Nitrile: the modern default

Nitrile has become the number-one exam-glove material in U.S. healthcare, and for good reason: it delivers a strong barrier with high puncture and chemical resistance, and because it's synthetic it carries no natural-rubber-latex allergy risk. Modern nitrile formulas have closed most of the old “feel” gap with latex, so dexterity is no longer a real trade-off for most tasks. It's the safe general-purpose choice for exam rooms, medication handling, and anywhere chemical splash or sharps are in play. Latex: best feel, with a caveat

How to read the glove spec sheet

  • ASTM standard. Exam gloves are tested to material-specific ASTM standards — D6319 (nitrile), D3578 (latex), D5250 (vinyl) — with barrier integrity assessed by water-leak testing (ASTM D5151). A stated ASTM standard signals an exam-grade glove, not an industrial one.
  • AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) — lower is better. AQL is the allowable pinhole/defect rate. ASTM permits up to 2.5 for exam gloves; the European EN 455 minimum is 1.5. A glove rated AQL 1.5 has fewer allowable defects than one at 2.5 or 4.0 — a real quality differentiator.
  • Thickness (mil). Thicker gloves (higher mil, often at the fingertips) resist punctures better for high-risk work; thinner gloves maximize tactile feel for routine tasks.
  • Powder-free. The standard today. Powdered gloves are largely phased out of medical use because glove powder can irritate and carry allergens. Buy powder-free.
  • Exam vs. sterile surgical. Exam gloves are non-sterile for general use; sterile surgical gloves are individually paired and sized for aseptic procedures.
