Burton Exam Light Buying Guide: What to Look For in Clinic Exam Lighting

person Mediplies Team calendar_today

An exam light is one of those purchases you don't think about until you're squinting. If you're weighing a Burton exam light against other options, this guide covers what actually matters before you buy.

For a broader look at exam versus surgical lighting, see our Surgical & Exam Lighting Guide.

What to look for

  • Light intensity: enough to illuminate the exam area without washing out detail. Compare lux output at the working distance listed on the spec sheet.
  • Color temperature and color rendering: neutral, daylight-balanced white light with a high color rendering index (CRI) shows tissue more accurately. Warmer light can make subtle color changes harder to judge. Check the Kelvin and CRI figures on each model's spec sheet.
  • Mobility vs mounting: floor-standing lights move between rooms; wall or ceiling mounts free up floor space but commit you to a layout.
  • Adjustability: a good light aims where you point it and stays there. Test the arm, not just the light head.
  • Light source: LED has a long service life and runs much cooler than halogen, which makes it more comfortable for both the practitioner and the patient.

Burton exam lights we carry

Burton Medical makes several LED exam light lines, each built for a different task. Lines Mediplies carries include:

  • AIM LED (AIM 070 and AIM 100): Burton positions the AIM as both an examination and procedure light, with floor stand, wall, single ceiling, and dual ceiling options. See the Burton AIM 100 LED Exam Light, Floor Stand.
  • Super Exam LED: focused, high-output illumination for a smaller exam field, available in white or adjustable color. See the Burton Super Exam LED Light.
  • Outpatient LED and CoolSpot II: general exam lights for everyday patient rooms, in wall and floor stand configurations.
  • Epic LED Magnifier and UV LED Magnifier: magnification for detailed skin work, with the UV model adding Wood's light examination.
  • Carelite LED: a compact task light for charting, bedside tasks, and minor procedures. See the Carelite LED.

The short version

Buy LED, check the color temperature and CRI on the spec sheet, and buy the mount that fits your room. Don't cheap out on the arm.
