A medication cart is the workhorse of the floor — the right one makes med passes faster, safer, and more organized. Here is how to spec one.

1. Security first

For controlled substances, choose the right lock for your workflow: a simple keyed lock, a keyless combination lock, or an electronic/auto-lock with audit capability. Match the lock to your facility's accountability requirements.

2. Drawers vs. med bins

Drawer carts suit larger supplies and multi-patient storage; unit-dose med-bin (cassette) carts organize medications patient-by-patient for fast, error-reducing passes. Many facilities standardize on bin carts for exactly this reason.

3. Construction & cleanability

• Powder-coated steel or heavy-duty polymer for daily wear
• Smooth surfaces that sanitize easily
• A work surface with side rails

4. Mobility

Look for four smooth-rolling casters with at least two locking, plus a push handle. Cart weight and caster quality determine how it feels after the hundredth trip down the hall.

5. Size it to the unit

More storage is not always better — an oversized cart is hard to maneuver in tight rooms. Match bin/drawer count to your patient load.
