Vaccine Freezer Guide: Frozen Storage, Ultra-Low & Sizing

The key takeaway: routine frozen vaccines do not go in an ultra-low freezer — −85°C is far colder than they require and can be its own risk. Ultra-low units are for materials that genuinely need that range.

What the CDC requires for frozen vaccines

The rules mirror refrigerated storage, adjusted for the colder set point:

  • Stand-alone, purpose-built freezer held at −50°C to −15°C. Dorm-style and bar-style combination units are prohibited for any vaccine.
  • Continuous monitoring with a digital data logger (DDL) and buffered probe, recording at least every 30 minutes, with a current NIST-traceable calibration certificate.
  • No food or drink in the unit, adequate air circulation, and a documented excursion-response plan.

Manual defrost vs. frost-free: which is better?

This is the most-debated freezer question, and both types are used in clinical storage:

  • Manual-defrost freezers avoid automatic defrost cycles, so temperature stays very stable — but they require scheduled manual defrosting (with product temporarily moved to backup storage).
  • Automatic-defrost (frost-free) freezers periodically warm slightly to shed frost. Purpose-built medical frost-free units are engineered to keep the storage compartment within range during that cycle, trading a small amount of temperature stability for far less maintenance.
